It is also important to understand government control over media and the status of free press. In many cases there are countries which have very limited freedom of the press, here are two great web sites wihch deal with this issue.

YES English Online

This site is a great resource. Many of the news sites I found from this site. It also listes the status of media freedom as free, not free, or partially free. This is very helpful in determining the quality of the information that is being provided by the web site being viewed.

Freedom House

freedom in other countries. This site also analyzes religious, political, and civil liberties by countries. This is a wonderful resource loaded with charts and graphs.

  ex blue-free,  yellow partly-free, red-not free

Reporters without Boarders

An internet media watchdog which focuses specifically on the freedom of the press. Again this site has in depth analysis of press freedoms and media access to information across the world.

There are also many international media sites that cover entire regions of the world for news that are watched and listened to by millions of people across the globe. Here are some examples:

Eurasianet

This is a great site for both news and reference, this covers Central Asia( the istans) quite well.

The Times of Central Asia

This site also deals with the Eurasian area, and is also a great news site.

AllAfrica

Seeing as Africa has very little press freedom, this is one of the best English Language sites for acquiring information from that continent.

Al Jazeera

This is the premier news site of the Arab world. In almost every country in the Middle East if you are watching the news you are most likely watching it on Al Jazeera. This Quatar based channel has been nicknamed the "Arab CNN." Just recently the English language web site has been launched, and the above link takes one there. (be warned, the site is still suffering major technical difficulties after hackers attacked the web site, it seems to have stabilized for now, but their coverage of the war in Iraq has angered many people and it is believed this was the motivation of the hackers.)

MEMRI

Another great informational page from the middle east.

World News Network

A very powerful network of news stations that has global reach. Very informative and worth checking out.
