Emergency Early Dismissal Procedures

In a situation in which weather conditions significantly worsen during the day, or in other emergency situations, it may be necessary to dismiss students early. The procedure will be as follows:

1. A Connect-Ed call will be made the night before to let you know that there is a strong possibility of an early release the next day due to weather concerns. This will be done so that you will be able to make child care arrangements ahead of time. Please remember to notify your school in writing should your "dismissal" arrangements need to change for early release. Be sure to share those arrangements with your child before he/she leaves for school.

2.  If the next day the weather forecast remains inclement, another Connect-Ed call will be made informing parents of the time early dismissal will begin.

3.  The schools will release in the following order:

  • Northport High School
  • The six elementary schools
  • The two middle schools

Releasing the high school students first serves two purposes. It allows the student drivers to leave school before the buses are on the road and also enables high school students to serve as babysitters.

EMERGENCY CLOSING OF SCHOOLS

Emergency school closings, including district parochial schools, will be announced on radio stations:

WGLI (1290 AM) WALK (97.5 AM/FM)

WBLI (106.1 FM) TV Channel 12

DELAYED OPENING OF SCHOOLS

This procedure is implemented under very specific weather conditions. It allows district officials to coordinate transportation and/or snow removal efforts in order to take advantage of improving weather/road conditions. Announcements will be made on the same radio stations used for emergency closings. In the event of a delayed opening, school will start two (2) hours later.
